Sometimes, you understand why something affects you, but you still react when a memory, situation, or familiar trigger brings it all back. You may have talked about it, thought about it, analyzed it from every angle, and still feel stuck.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) offers another way to approach distressing experiences. At Heart Mind & Soul Counseling, ART intensives provide dedicated time to focus on a concern that matters to you, with preparation, individualized therapeutic work, and follow-up built into the process.
In-person intensives are available in the Hilton Head Island area, with virtual appointments available for clients who are located in South Carolina.
What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?
Accelerated Resolution Therapy is a structured psychotherapy approach that uses guided eye movements and imagery-based techniques to help people work with distressing memories, images, and emotional responses.
ART may be helpful for a range of concerns, depending on your history, goals, and clinical needs. You do not have to know exactly what you want to work on before reaching out. We can explore that together and determine whether ART is an appropriate approach for you.
The process is collaborative. You remain an active participant in your care, and we will discuss your questions, preferences, and readiness before beginning.
What can an ART intensive help with?
People seek ART for many different reasons. Depending on your circumstances and clinical assessment, an intensive may be worth exploring if you are experiencing:
-
When certain situations, images, or thoughts continue to trigger a strong emotional response.
-
When past experiences continue to affect how you feel or respond in the present.
-
When betrayal, conflict, rejection, or difficult family experiences remain emotionally charged.
-
When a significant loss or change is difficult to navigate.
-
When particular reminders or situations bring up reactions you would like to understand and address.
-
When you and your therapist determine that ART may be appropriate for your treatment goals.
ART isn’t the right fit for every concern or every person. An intensive doesn’t guarantee resolution in one appointment, and some people benefit more from ongoing therapy or a different approach.
Why choose an intensive?
Traditional therapy offers valuable space to work through concerns over time. An intensive provides a different format: a longer, dedicated appointment that allows us to focus on a particular therapeutic goal without the usual stopping point of a standard session.
An intensive may appeal to you if you:
Prefer to set aside dedicated time for focused therapeutic work.
Have a particular concern you want to explore with your therapist.
Would like to explore ART without committing to a weekly appointment schedule.
Are already in therapy and want to discuss whether focused ART work could complement your ongoing care.
The goal is thoughtful, individualized treatment, not rushing through difficult material or measuring success by how much we accomplish in a single day.

In-person and virtual options
In-person in the Hilton Head Island area
If you prefer meeting face-to-face, in-person appointments offer a dedicated setting away from your everyday routine. We will discuss scheduling and practical details during your consultation.
Virtual ART intensives
Virtual appointments are available if you are physically located in South Carolina. You will need a private space, a reliable internet connection, and a plan for support after the appointment.
Before scheduling, we'll confirm that virtual care is appropriate for your circumstances and discuss the additional planning needed for an extended online session.
Frequently asked questions
-
No. You can inquire about an ART intensive even if you have not previously worked with me. All new clients must complete the assessment and preparation process before an intensive is scheduled.
-
ART uses imagery-based techniques and doesn’t require you to share every detail of a distressing experience with me. However, I'll need just enough information to understand your concerns, assess clinical appropriateness, and establish treatment goals. There will be several times when I’ll ask if you care to share. No is always an appropriate answer.
-
The research shows a client needs an average of 5 sessions to see a noticeable difference. However, there’s no way to guarantee a particular result. Some people may notice meaningful changes after only one hour of ART, while others may need additional sessions or even a different treatment approach. We'll assess your progress and discuss next steps based on your individual experience.
-
Absolutely. An intensive may complement ongoing therapy when it is clinically appropriate and coordinated thoughtfully. With your written permission, I can communicate with your existing therapist about relevant treatment goals and continuity of care.
-
Your well-being and readiness guide the work. ART allows you to move in and out of your experience, with frequent breaks. We'll also discuss ways to pause, ground, and regulate, and we can adjust the pace or stop when clinically appropriate.
-
Plan to leave the rest of your day as open as possible, if you can. Avoid scheduling demanding activities immediately afterward, and give yourself time to rest, hydrate, and notice how you're feeling. We'll discuss individualized aftercare and how to access support if you experience significant distress before your follow-up.
-
I don’t take insurance. However, I can provide you with a Superbill to submit to your insurance provider for potential reimbursement. In this scenario, you pay upfront.
Yes, HSA/FSA cards are accepted.
-
The first step is a complimentary consultation. We'll discuss your goals, current needs, and whether the format is a reasonable fit. If regular therapy or another service would be more appropriate, we'll talk about that, too.
